NYT-Reader
Contextual news reading mode
How might we help teenagers develop the habit of reading the New York Times?
PROBLEM
The New York Times is one of the most reputed newspapers famous for its in depth and accurate news coverage. However in this age of internet, where information is free and abundant, it becomes difficult to get a new subscriber base. To do so, we decided to focus on the new young readers. We found that there is currently a gap in educating teens in the current political news in the United States and the world.
SOLUTION
Our solution was a guide that would ramp teens up into understanding current complex political topics. We designed the New York Times reader mode which would explain an article to a new reader by giving relevant background and contextual information. It would highlight the key players and terminologies and also provide a timeline view of previous articles which led up to the current event.

PROCESS
Research
We were briefed with a lot of insights from the New York Times research team. That information was synthesized and grouped into clusters to identify areas of intervention. We later brainstormed concepts and scenarios for our chosen topic before filtering into one core concept.

USER jOURNEY EMPATHY MAP
We focussed on teens who were interested in politics but did not have the right resources to understand the context of the political climate. By integrating our NYT reader mode with social media feeds, we aimed to draw the attention of this huge potential group to become more politically aware.
